Custom Inlay by Sharon Van Dusen

Biography
In 1993 after many years as a historic toy-maker, I decided to try my hand at doing the inlay work on my husband Bill’s Mountain Dulcimers. Bill suggested I read James E. Patterson’s book on Pearl Inlay. Using it as a starting point I discovered the joy of hand cutting and inlaying shell. Over the years the way I do inlay has continuously changed and developed. As with so many things in life I find there is always more to learn.

In 2002 I participated in my very first on-line Inlay workshop taught by Amy Hopkins for The Musical Instrument Makers Forum. After so many years “on my own” it was great fun to be able to interact with and learn from other Inlay Artists.

Today I continue to learn and look forward to each new project. As well as doing inlay on Bill’s Dulcimers I also work on other instruments. I enjoy each new project and learn something new with each one.
